Into the eye of the storm
I’ve done tornados. I’ve done earthquakes. Looks like I, now, get to do hurricane. Technically, it’s a typhoon, but one in the same at the end of the day. Wouldn’t ya know it’s coming to slap Shanghai on the first holiday break we get in the city.
Worry not, constant (and not constant) readers…. We are well stocked and provisioned. We have bottled water and plenty of food in house. We have a gad range and a lighter, so even without power, we can cook food. It might not be gourmet and it might not be elegant, but it will be edible. Noodles and ramen if all else fails, but we do have ice and insulated bags and we can make that work for up to 48 hours needs be as well.
Part of me is a little nervous about this storm that’s coming. Part of me just accepts it. I can’t sharpie it away from Shanghai, so all we can do is roll with it and make the best of what will come. We are on the 6th floor, so we have little chance of anything flying at windows and the like. Not to say that it can’t happen… they are saying winds 90-125km per hour (that’s 65-120mph for my non-metric folk), so things can get airborne really quickly, but it does lessen our chances.
The city is preparing for it as well. Some train and flight services have been suspended. I got to the grocery this morning to stock up on the above mentioned items and that place was a madhouse. Limits on water and other essential goods and lines that were Looooooong. Shopping normally takes me 25-30 minutes door to door. Today, I went in focused and knowing exactly what I needed and it took me 55 minutes door to door. Any other day and this would have (probably) been a 20 min trip. Madness!!!!!
So, I will check in later and as needed, but for now, we are safe and as ready as we can be for things. I’m guessing (can’t speak to if we lose power or not) I’ll be back Wednesday, but I might post to check in as needed (assuming we have power for internet and the like), but those that know me or need me can poke me via email. I think I will have access via my phone to that, but again…. I can’t say if that network will be up or not due to storm conditions.
The sky is ominous looking and the wind is starting to pick up. This will just be another adventure that we get to have together, albeit a bit less fun than some of the others we’ve had in the past.
Let’s go, Kiddo… this time we get to have a weather adventure and a first for all of us. You get to see your very first big storm as this will put (if the forecasts are correct) the Vietnam rain to shame. Mumma and I got you, so don’t worry and know we are as prepared as we can get. At the end of the day, this is just another story that gets to color your world; but as it’s a first for all of us, it’ll get to color Mumma and my world as well. We all get to experience it together, so that will be something that we can remember and talk about together for years to come. We love you.
