Four More
I went to my first Brewers game in 1983. It was a summer day and it was against the California Angels. Yes, that CA Angels, not the Disneyheim Angels of Anaheim. My dad won tickets, or was given them at work, or something like that. I was 5.
I remember the day. The big blue sky and the white puffy clouds. The grass looked so green I thought it was made of emerald and the dirt was a perfect diamond of dirt and chalked lines. The bases seemed to gleam like they had stolen from the clouds in the sky; perfect pillows of white on the dirt diamond. I was hooked.
The players… They were like Roman Gods to me. Names like Reggie Jackson, Rod Carew, and Tommy John. On the other side, the Brewers, you had Ted Simmons, Cecil Cooper, Jim Gantner, Robin Yount (still at SS), Paul Molitor, Ben Olgilviem Charlie Moore, and let us not forget Rollie Fingers and his mustache. Ned Yost, who would go on to manage the Brewers (2003-2008), was a back-up catcher on that team.
I can’t tell you who won or lost, although I was happy coming home, so I assume the Brewers won, but I can tell you what that game felt like to that me of then. It felt like I was allowed to see magic happen. A sport that I already had an affinity for suddenly came to life and was played in a way me and my little friends couldn’t play it. Every pitch looked perfect. Every hit looked like a missile coming off the bat. Every catch seemed to be a miracle. That was it for me. This was life. This was Brewers Baseball.
Then I suffered. The team fell into decline after the 1982 season. Finishing 5th in 1983 and then 7th in 84. I didn’t see a Brewers make the playoffs until 2008 as a wild card team and didn’t see them win a division until 2011. 25 years of fandom before a playoff game. 43 years since a World Series.
Now, however, they have made it. A World Series Team. And I couldn’t be happier…. Or more nervous. I have friends who are Cubs fans (I know, I know, but no accounting for taste LOL) and frequent reader and friend of the blog Dr. J is a RedSox fan, he husband Mr. E a ChiSox fan and I’ve seen them all win it and in the last 20ish years, but my Brewers…. Sadly, have not.
Is it The Brewers turn to win one? Do I, and all of the loyal Brewers fans, get to celebrate a championship this year. My fingers are crossed. Tampa Bay and Cleveland are left and both of those teams fight and claw and don’t give up. Just like this Brewers team.
So, I’m nervous. But I have hope. The hope that comes with 25 years of fandom between playoff appearances. I will be watching, cheering, and giving every ounce of karma and will I can to seeing them win it all. I will be saddened if they don’t, I will be overjoyed if they do. But, win or lose, this team has been special. This season has been special. And I am glad to be a fan.
Let’s go, Brewers…. I’m hoping for 4 more wins. Just 4 more to seal the deal and take the trophy home. I’ll be watching (and pacing) each pitch and each inning. And I’ll be hoping. It’s time for MLB and whomever you face to Fear the Beer. Either way, thank you for it all. For the season. For the journey. And for letting this guy, this nobody who you don’t know, be your fan and have pride and love in the Blue and Gold.
