A long time ago became now
A long time ago, I met a girl named J. She was cute. Funny. Drank black coffee and dark roasts. Something about this person just clicked with me. And me with her. Years later, we marry. Years after that, Kiddo comes into our lives. Years after that, we move to Bangkok. Today, our babe became our little girl, as I took her off to school.
A long time ago, I met a girl named J. We dated and lived together. We married. In all of this, in the last 15 years, one of my favorite photos of J is her first day of school and walking to school. Today, Kiddo got her turn.
A long time ago, I met a girl named J. She is now a teacher at an International School in Bangkok where our daughter is attending.
J was out of the door early today so she could get to school and set things up and get herself into teacher mode. I was tasked with keeping Kiddo on a leash until it was time for her and I to venture out and sally forth to school. She was a bundle of energy and excitement, but you could see a little of the nervousness underneath it all. But she was so brave and excited. So alive and bursting with an anticipatory energy.
As we got closer, the excitement and running ahead and bursting to get there “as quick as we can even run” became a slower walk and from running and being solo to holding my hand. On the walk, she squeezed it pretty hard. “It’s a love you squeeze, Dada.” That was a nervous squeeze, Kiddo, but I love you too.
A long time ago, I met a girl named J. 15 years later and we have our only child at her first day of school.
A long time ago…. It seems like it was yesterday that we held her for the first time, took her home, changed our first diaper, had our first illness, had a first birthday, first solid food, first, first, first, first.
Let’s go, Kiddo… Today is the first, but not the last. Tomorrow will be another first. Then another. Then another. Then another. But no matter what, you are Mumma and my first love. We are SO proud of you. Let’s go, Kiddo… Time for you to take your first step towards whatever it is you will become.
