Morning, the wet and wild edition
I awoke this morning to the sounds of J showering. That is a normal thing in my life now and has been for almost a decade. Anyone who has dated, lived with, or married a teacher knows the deal. They are an early rising group, for the most part, and J falls firmly into that category. So, a quick peek into the shower (oohlala) and a smooch before heading out to the common room, where I find Kiddo in all her morning glory; munchin’ on cereal and doing her iPad time. I pour myself a coffee, but not before I’m show more app funness. The sky outside looked like it was going to be an interesting day.
As you can see, it was ominous looking. It was also strange drinking coffee, since it felt like it was nearing 7pm, not starting the day and nearing 7am.
I started my day with coffee and Kiddo, then we collectively kissed Mumma goodbye and we started our morning routine. She wanted oatmeal for breakfast; The Dada kind! Oatmeal with some cinnamon and brown sugar mixed in. After the water is poured and the oats are mixed, I add some raisins and mix again with a touch more water, since she doesn’t like it too thick and pasty. Then, as a finale touch, I give the top a quick drizzle of maple syrup. She loves it, it fills her up and sticks with her, and she’s really generally happier when she’s full. Since she’s also only full in the 30 seconds following her devouring meals, we’ve all learned (Nanny Beer included) that it’s best to keep things to nibble about. Carrots, apples, nuts, raisins, and the like and at meal times to just back up and keep your fingers clear.
She’s actually a slow eater, liking to chat while eating. I’d wonder where she got that from, but the first time J and I went out for a lunch (almost 16 years ago!) I got a plate of tacos and she got a burrito. She ate the burrito and one of my tacos in the time it took me to eat the first three. Kiddo, though, can eat. Tacos, as much as J and myself or more. McDs, get her a burger and fries, but not a small fry. She can do a medium easily. Ramen she will go to work on. She usually out eats me with sushi. So, you’ll probably not lose a finger to her eating, but the other night for dinner, she had two eggs, a bowl of buttered noodles with garlic, half a snow pear that was the size of her head, and then say she was hungry and she had a popsicle treat. I bet she could have eaten more as well.
Her body and brain are just BEGGING for nutrients and nourishment these days though. Being five is hungry work. School. Learning. Social. Physical. Mental. Language to learn. Letters. Numbers. Names. People. Places. It’s a LOT to do. So, her body is just crushing fuel right now.
We headed out a bit later, to walk to school. She looked at me and asked, “Dada, why do you look weird?”
What do you mean, “look weird”? YOU, Kiddo, gave me this shirt.
Oh! Right. Well, maybe you should only wear it around the house.
Nope. Walking you to school in it!
Oh! Oooooookay, if you have to.
I have to.
So glad school is socializing her. HAHA
We walked and she had the umbrella since I figured her dry was better than us both only half wet. It wasn’t too bad. It had slowed to a light rain by then. I also had her wear some old slip on shoes. I packed up my backpack with her shoes, socks, a dry shirt, and undies in my waterproof pouch. She has a change of clothes at school, but I grabbed socks and undies are right next to that and she had a second option for a shirt today and that was half folded and half put back, so I just grabbed it and stuffed it in the bag. Easy enough to put back if not needed. As I was putting it back, the Rain; Part Deux started.
It’s just been a rainy kind of day, but now, at 4pm, the sun is out.
I’ll never figure out Bangkok weather, but I betcha that this isn’t the first or last time I walk her to the school in the rain. Note to self: get another umbrella, J has a good one, Kiddo has a good one, but we’re not going to be able to share if I want to get her to school in a dry way.
Let’s go, Kiddo… today was a rainy walk adventure. Tomorrow, who knows, but I bet you the sun will rise in the east.
